Here's an interesting topic that I know some people are extremely particular about: Are the feminine versions of some professions insulting to women? Famously acid-tongued playwright David Mamet certainly thinks so (warning: deleted expletives abound).
I have several female actor friends who feel just as strongly that "actress" is demeaning, and one server friend feels the same about "waitress." Actor and waiter, please, they say.
The Star generally follows the Associated Press stylebook guide here, which says "actor," "actress," "waiter" and "waitress" are both acceptable -- but doesn't give the OK to "comedienne."
