Readers of The Star's coverage of Chiefs player Jovan Belcher's murder of his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and subsequent suicide has brought varied reactions from the readers I've spoken to.
Sam Mellinger's commentary has generated the most criticism I've heard, and that doesn't surprise me. His point of view is strong, and reactions -- pro and con -- have been strong as well. But at the end of the day, it's still a column, labeled as such. I can respect those readers who think it's wrong to call Belcher a "coward," but I also think it's defensible in the context.
The most positives I'm hearing are about today's story on Perkins and her loved ones, who are dealing with the loss.
"I always think (journalists) should spend all their time on the victims," said one caller. "When you always harp on the people who commit the crimes, you give the wrong focus." That's a critique I hear frequently.
