This one's a common refrain: Several readers this week have told me they wished the Veterans Day closings box that ran in the paper Monday had included more details.
For example, the box said:
Veterans Day was Sunday, but some government offices and trash haulers will observe it today.
It specified that Kansas City, Mo. municipal trash collection will be delayed a day, and that Deffenbaugh customers would be on the regular schedule.
But what about one of my callers, whose trash is picked up by a different private company? And what about the U.S. Postal Service, or the banks?
If there's one thing I've learned about reader expectations, it's this: The holidays other than the big six of New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are the times when people are most confused about what is and isn't open.
"Everybody knows things are closed for Christmas, but who can keep track of Veterans Day closings?" one caller asked. "I expect The Star to tell me more than this."
