Peggy Phillip, news director at KSHB and Region 4 & 5 Director for the Radio Television Digital News Association, has a blog post that's worth reading. It's about her station's thought processes in deciding how to report the death of Don Harman.

One of her best points: When her station's own assignment editor Nick Dutcher was found dead in his home last summer, Phillip notes that police initially thought he'd committed suicide. I remember one anonymous caller at the time said The Star should have reported what turned out to be unfounded rumor. That would have been wrong, obviously. (Antonio T. Grandison pleaded guilty to Dutcher's murder in January of this year.)

Also useful is Phillip's pointer to Reporting on Suicide, a website with good guidelines, developed by a host of experts in fields these issues touch.
