Why different headlines?

A question from an emailer about the print edition from Tuesday:

I have two Kansas City Star newspapers from Tues. Oct. 23, 2012. The headlines are different on the front page sections. One headline says "Debating Diplomacy" and the other says "Romney, Obama Spar". Why is that?

The headlines discrepancy makes me wonder if the Kansas City Star was attempting to paint Mr. Romney as a bully to the President with the latter headline.

I am going to share this with others to see what their opinion is of your choice to run two different headlines.

Unusual posthumous byline on McGovern obituary

On Monday, the print edition of The Star ran an obituary of George McGovern, written by David E. Rosenbaum of The New York Times. It carried an unusual note at the end:

(The author of this obituary, David E. Rosenbaum, a Washington correspondent for The New York Times, died in 2006. William McDonald of the Times contributed reporting to this article, as did Kristi Eaton and Walter R. Mears of The Associated Press.)

Misquoted Romney "binders" line in Gail Collins column requires correction

An emailer who mostly objected to the content of Gail Collins' column on the second presidential debate shared several of her fair, but subjective points about Collins' opinion. The column ran in The Star's print edition on Sunday, and before that in The New York Times.

KansasCity.com difficult to search

A reader was quite frustrated when a search of KansasCity.com for an opinion column he'd read in print came up empty.

"There's just way too much stuff on your website," he said. "I bet I've been searching for ten minutes and I just can't find a trace of this bit."

Wichita Eagle Koch brothers story brings radically different interpretations

On Sunday, The Star ran a story about Charles and David Koch of Wichita's Koch Industries. The story was written by Bill Wilson and Roy Wenzl of The Wichita Eagle. The Star and Eagle are both owned by the McClatchy Company and share some resources, but nobody from The Star worked on this story other than to put it on the page, which required trimming for space reasons. The original, much longer version is here on the Eagle's site.

Should journalists not depict improper behavior?

A caller today pointed out a photo that ran in the 913 news magazine. It shows a young woman volunteering by acting in a video produced by the Merriam Fire Department and Shawnee Mission School District for National Fire Safety Week.

She is lowering an emergency escape ladder out of a window -- but my caller noticed she is holding the ladder backwards. It has small feet on each step, which holds the rungs far enough from the side of the house to make it possible to climb down easily.

Page layout upsetting

I've heard multiple reader objections to the layout of the Local cover in Saturday's print edition. Can you see why from the image above?

Obviously, their issue is that the main headline about manslaughter charges against a teen ran over the top of a photo of a totally different teen -- Equestrian Maggie Gould, riding in the Hunter
Jumper Preview show at the American Royal Horse Show.

"Easy to read" in the eye of the beholder

Readers often want to discuss the design and layout of KansasCity.com and especially the print edition of The Star. They're also often surprised (and sometimes say they flat-out don't believe me) when I tell them I get a variety of opinions about what is and isn't easy to read.

Focus on local, not national election news

A rare, but cogent, criticism from a reader who thinks The Star spends too much time on national election topics.

"(Information on local races) is the kind of information that newspapers exist to provide and you are doing a terrible job of it. Why so much sports and nothing about what really matters? Why so much national coverage and no coverage of what's going on in the state house. Please stop getting your cues from the national news and start being our local paper."

Bacon baked goods - put them in the fridge

Today's Food section features a variety of unusual uses for bacon, including recipes for cakes, brownies, cookies and other sweets.

People are accustomed to keeping baked cookies in a cookie jar at room temperature -- but what about the peanut butter-bacon cookies, one caller asked me.
