Two ACORN stories - big news?

UPDATE: Most people contacting me think the sting videos are indeed big. One typical example: "It's now three videos - Maryland, New York and Washington D.C... I think it's a story now especially with millions and millions of dollars funding ACORN."

Many readers have called this morning asking why the print edition of The Star hasn't had anything on two scandals involving ACORN.

In Florida, authorities arrested 11 ACORN workers suspected of turning in fake voter registrations last fall.

Joe Wilson's outburst: Too old by tomorrow?

A story in today's paper about Rep. Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, yelling "You lie!" at President Barack Obama during his address last night is a big topic of discussion this morning.

A question in the morning news meeting among editors: Will it be water under the bridge after being dissected all day online and in the talk shows? And I have to wonder if it will seem like piling on, especially since Wilson isn't a local representative.

Who wrote that editorial?

A caller just now asked who wrote today's editorial about President Barack Obama's speech to Congress last night.

Editorials are unsigned because they reflect the group consensus of the editorial board: Miriam Pepper, Yael T. Abouhalkah, E. Thomas McClanahan, Barbara Shelly, Lewis W. Diuguid, Matthew Schofield and publisher Mark Zieman. Zieman sees the board's topics, but doesn't normally attend their meetings.

Obama's "when" not in story

Multiple readers have pointed out that today's story about President Barack Obama's address to Congress tonight doesn't mention when it airs.

"Who, what, when and where are all important, don't you think?" asked one caller.

No question. And oddly, I've noticed many other sources' versions of this story similarly omit the time. The daily TV grid in FYI doesn't have it today, either -- though it should have gotten the update.

Choice of "gunplay" trivializing

An interesting point about word choice from a reader, about the print headline to a story in Saturday's paper about a boy who shot into a ceiling and attempted to shoot the principal at a Joplin middle school three years ago.

The print headline was "10-year term for gunplay." (It's different online, where there are no space constraints.). The e-mailer's point:

Paper and online puzzles -- different beasts

A question I hear fairly often about the crosswords, Sudokus and other games that appear in the print edition of The Star:

"Is there anywhere on your web page that I can find the answers to the puzzles? I don't even see any where you have the puzzles, crosswords etc in your on line site, just games on line that have nothing to do with what is in the paper."

No charges - difficult to do a story

I truly empathize with a caller I spoke to at some length this morning. She lives in western Kansas, and related a long story about what looked to me like a convincing argument that a man she knows is a sexual predator. She's spoken to her local law enforcement, who aren't interested in investigating the allegations against the man, and wonders if The Star could help.

Local sex clubs: A watchdog story?

A caller suggested today that The Star look at Club Erotica, a sex club in the Kansas City area that advertises openly. "I think people need to be aware that this kind of thing is out there in every city," she said. "Its neighbors for one need to know."

Politicians: No "As I See It" platform?

An e-mailer objects to the Opinion department running an "As I See It" column from Dennis Moore yesterday. She writes, in part:
