Why mention of gun plant?

People have very strong opinions about news coverage involving guns, whether they be about laws, criminal shootings, or sales and manufacturing. They often point out details in those stories that look like bias.

An example: The story in today's paper about puzzling out the motive of Kurt Myers, the upstate New York man who shot and killed four people before dying in a gunfight with law enforcement.

Content differs from website to print, and vice versa

How's this for an understatement? The world of publishing in multiple formats seems to get more complicated every day.

A caller just now was having trouble finding a recent op-ed column he initially read in the print edition when he searched KansasCity.com for it. He kept coming up with nothing, though he was sure his search terms were relevant.

Elided profanity still objectionable

Readers often contact me when they see something they think is inappropriate for a general-interest paper. One such example came in a commentary column by Lisa Gutierrez over the weekend.

Noting bill numbers would be helpful

A reader whose title indicates he manages advocacy for a professional association emailed me with a suggestion that has merit, I think:

This is not really a question or concern about fairness or accuracy, but a request for just a tiny bit more information. When you folks report on developments with legislation in Topeka or Jefferson City, can you please include the bill number in the report. That will make it a lot easier for us to correspond with our elected representatives about it.

Missing "Jumble" answer from yesterday

It's always a bad day when there's something wrong with one of the puzzles in the print edition. This is one of those days.

The last line of the answer to yesterday's "Jumble" puzzle is cut off at the bottom of Page 30 of the Preview section. Don't read further if you don't want the answer.

The whole thing:

If a penny came to life, it would become ... CENT-IENT.

UPDATE: I just got the computer file for the whole page, and the "Word Game" is also cut off (as is the bottom of the comic "Pickles" -- but that one's legible).

"Today" and timing on the Web versus print

An emailer this afternoon pointed me to a story online about a streetcar open house, set for Wednesday at Union station. While the headline had the right day, the body copy of the story said it was to take place "today."

As it turns out, that story was prepared to go into the print edition tomorrow, so "today" is what it should have said. However, most news items such as this are posted online as soon as they're ready to go, and nobody noticed the disconnect there.

When info is un-Googleable

A reader emailed me about Sunday's front-page story about the natural gas explosion that destroyed JJ's restaurant near the Plaza last month:

Regarding today's front page story, I can't find any on line references to the existence of a 'North American Gas Workers Association.' Searches for Mark McDonald show him associated with the New England Gas Workers Association

Obituary contents are up to families

I think I've covered this ground before, but it bears repeating, because many people are confused about what exactly obituaries are.

The Star prints only what families or funeral homes submit in the "Remembrances" section. I've fielded several calls in recent weeks from people asking why something struck them odd about obituaries. Why did one not list all of a person's children by name? Why did family of someone whose military service was noted not choose to run the American flag that's offered free for any veterans?

Surprising precipitation totals on "Weather Watch"

Let me tell you something that might surprise you: People who read the "Weather Watch" at the back of the Classified section are really observant about it. In fact, I'd say it's among the three or four regular features in the print edition that generate the most feedback at my lines. In fact, I just received a piece of postal mail with a copy of a recent page that a reader has marked up with his suggestions on how to improve it.

Objection to term "non-traditional relationships"

Reader Mike Wilke made an interesting point about a recent story that concerns a court ruling about parental rights in same-sex relationships:

I was pleased to read today's article "Kansas Supreme Court upholds lesbian mother’s rights" and the positive development that it represents for lesbian and gay equality.
