Star policy on Washington NFL team's name

A caller this morning expressed his incredulity that The Star doesn't normally print the name of Washingon's NFL team: the Redskins.

"With all of the other things there are to worry about in the world, like homelessness and wars, why does anyone worry about this?" he asked.

As I've said many times, I'm not big on comparisons unless they're awfully close parallels, and I fail to see any relationship between war and the name of a football team.

A variety of feedback to the "Killer Love" series

This week, The Star has been running a six-part series called "Killer Love," about the case of the murder of Randy Stone. Convicted were Stone's wife Teresa and the family's pastor David Love, who had been conducting a years-long affair.

The first voices I heard early in the week -- mostly on the phone -- were more negative than positive.

More Royals, less Chiefs

I hear a lot from fans who would like to see their favorite teams and sports get the most prominent play, both in the paper and on KansasCity.com. This year in particular, those who follow Sporting KC soccer team have been especially supportive of their winning team. It's not unusual for me to hear the suggestion that if The Star and other media covered soccer more closely, the sport's popularity would grow. Sure, you could argue that's chicken-and-egg, but I think it's also an idea with definite merit.

A common Mideast/Obama complaint I don't understand

It isn't often that I can't grasp something I'm hearing from a reader, and I can't think of any other time when multiple people have expressed similar concerns but I'm still in the dark. Maybe someone out there can help me on this one.

Old details, reported incorrectly for years, still require correction

There is a story in today's paper about a hearing re-examining the conviction of Missouri death-row inmate Reginald "Reggie" Clemons. Though it's on the other side of the state, The Star has covered the story sporadically since 1991, when the crimes occurred.

I've spent a good deal of time looking through past coverage of the case in The Star and elsewhere, and I've verified two details an emailer pointed out.

Editorial board doesn't choose news stories

"Shame, shame on Miriam Pepper and the editorial board for choosing to run this 'Killer Love' series on the front page of the paper!" yelled a caller this morning.

This caller was under an erroneous impression that many others share, and I understand newspaper terminology can confusing. I also don't think papers can make this distinction clear enough, or do it often enough.

AL East standings - big mixup

UPDATE: I just discovered there was a significant technical problem that affected the Sports department in multiple ways last night. There were a few other glitches in the section as well, one of which looks like it will generate a Page A2 correction.

---

I've heard from a large number of readers about an error that should be pretty obvious to anyone who looks at the baseball standings on Page B4 today: The figures for the American League East are just flat-out wrong. They show data from much earlier in the season.

Romney/Libya statement timing

There is a story in today's paper about Mitt Romney's statement on the Obama administration's response to attacks on U.S. diplomatic posts in Libya and Egypt. It has angered several readers calling and emailing me today.

Suicide story unusual, hurtful to some

Overnight, the Web editors shared three email messages from readers who disapproved of a story about a woman who died on the train tracks near 81st Street and Indiana Avenue yesterday morning.

The objections all centered around the details offered in the story -- particularly that the woman was "suicidal," and the statement to police by the conductor of the train that hit her, who said she ran out of a wooded area, lay on the tracks and looked at him before being struck.

Further developments notwithstanding, readers wanted Libya on A1

I've spoken to some readers this morning who have been watching news on TV and online about the killing of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya. They all said The Star erred in not putting the story on Page A1 this morning, but instead running a rather small story on Page A2.
